SRI specializes in transitioning technology from basic R&D to fieldable prototypes for both US government and commercial customers. ATSD’s Applied Physics Laboratory has an opening for a photonics research engineering intern. The intern should have experience with photonic integrated circuits and will work with our researchers to execute on a variety of projects from optical phased arrays to quantum networking. The candidate will work on small-medium sized research teams and will be expected to interact with technical personnel with a variety of backgrounds, including hardware development, software development, and systems engineering.
The intern position can either work a hybrid schedule out of our office in Boulder, CO or fully remotely from the Boston, MA area.
- PIC component modeling and layout
- Photonic system simulation
- Data analysis
- Implementing automation techniques in our measurement and layout process flow
We expect there to be a focus on silicon PIC device characterization, but the ideal candidate is flexible and willing to learn new materials systems and measurement techniques in a variety of fields.
- Pursuing a PhD in physics, electrical engineering, materials science, or related technical discipline
- Due to government requirements candidates must be a US Citizen
- Experience with scripted PIC layout
- Experience with optical device modeling in industry standard tools (e.g. Lumerical, tidy3d), including mode solvers and FDTD simulations
- Experience testing PICs, analyzing data, and/or PIC component layout
- Programming in python (numpy, scipy, pyvisa, etc.) and MATLAB
- Prior experience working on Government-funded R&D programs is desirable, but not required
The salary range is $30-$45/hr. Salary ranges will vary and are based on several factors, including geographic location, market competitiveness and equity amongst internal employees in similar roles.
