The Veryable Marketplace allows businesses to revolutionize and optimize their operations by bringing in on-demand labor through our two-sided marketplace. As we grow and scale, we want to mature and improve this marketplace, build out a journey for our business users, and automate many of the actions they could take. To do all of this, we seek an experienced Backend Engineer to lead our team, guide the architecture of our solutions, and help drive growth and retention on our platform.
Our ideal Engineer has a passion for development, problem-solving, and architecture. We want engineers who are closely tied to the product and are committed to delivering the best possible experience to our users.
This is a full-time role, based in Downtown Dallas, Texas. We believe strongly in hands-on collaboration, and for the growth stage of our business we rely on in-office, in-person dynamics to ensure we can move at a high pace with efficiency.

Overview

The Backend Engineer will serve as a technical expert on the Marketplace - Businesses team at Veryable. Your day-to-day work will require you to work with product managers, designers, and engineers to define objectives and propose strategies and deliverables to meet those objectives. You will get to solve the hard engineering problems of scaling our product, reducing latency, ensuring security, and improving technical excellence, all while mentoring engineers, shaping the team culture, influencing engineering processes, and helping to guide the direction of our products. Specifically, you’ll be leading three junior backend engineers and collaborating with 7 frontend and mobile developers, a designer, and a product manager. You’ll have the support and supervision of an incredible engineering manager.

Responsibilities

The work here is fun, fast-paced, and challenging. Our developers are fantastic coders and subject matter experts, and they play a critical role in growing our business. Specifically, a backend engineer is responsible for the following:

  • Contribute to the development and evolution of an industry-changing tech platform
  • Build robust services and APIs to power existing and new features for our web and mobile apps
  • Own the entire development lifecycle of select roadmap features, including design, development, testing, release and post-release support
  • Collaborate with fellow engineers to transition our platform to a distributed Service-Oriented Architecture
  • Interact with product and business partners to plan new features, refine and enhance existing features, and offer support and technical guidance
  • Embody our world-class tech team and company cultures

Requirements

  • At least 1-2 years of experience in backend engineering roles
  • Strong willingness to learn and build applications using Node JS as a backend language
  • Strong understanding of JavaScript and Java/ Python/ PhP or any Object Oriented Language
  • Ability to create and consume internal/ third party APIs
  • Ability to utilize and implement creational/ behavioral/ structural design patterns
  • Strong understanding of RDBMS databases, such as MySql/ Postgres/ Oracle etc.
  • Strong understanding of Mac OS/ Linux/ Windows OS and Git/ SVN versioning tools
  • Passion for solving new challenges, new problems, and reacting quickly to market changes and requirements.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and report on status
  • Demonstrate strong time management skills
  • Display high levels of coordination with other developers using digital tools
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Experience writing technical documentation and specifications
  • Experience writing clean, performant, and testable backend code
  • Experience integrating 3rd party tools and libraries
  • Ability to work in-office at our headquarters in Downtown Dallas, Texas
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher or equivalent experience in lieu of formal education

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with Node JS, JavaScript, TypeScript, Kafka or any Message/ Task queuing system, OOP concepts
  • Experience with RDBMS, ORMs or any Database APIs
  • Experience with Test Driven Development best practices
  • Experience working with agile project management methodologies: Kanban/ Scrum
  • Experience with containers and container orchestration
