ABOUT US
Sims Municipal Recycling (SMR) is a division of Sims Metal Management Limited, the world's leading recycler of scrap metal and electronics. SMR is the processor of 100% of the metal, glass and plastic and 50% of the paper collected by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) throughout the five boroughs. SMR services the City of New York with its facilities in Queens, the Bronx and Jersey City, and its newest facility in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, which opened in 2013. The Brooklyn plant is the largest commingled recycling facility in North America. SMR also processes recyclables produced by several municipalities and private generators in the NY-NJ metro region.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
SMR is seeking to fill the role of Education Assistant at its state-of-the-art processing facility in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The Brooklyn facility is home to the Recycling Education Center (REC), hosting over 8,000 visitors a year through daily tours and community events. Currently all REC programming is virtual, but will begin incorporating in person programming over the next year. The Education Assistant will lead interactive school field trips either online or in person at the REC to promote awareness of waste and recycling for 2nd-12th grade students. Applicants should be comfortable working with diverse groups of all-ages, and show a commitment to enthusiastically and safely conducting environmental education programming in the classroom and dynamic tour settings. While prior experience in recycling is desirable, the Assistant will have the opportunity to develop a knowledge base through facility tours and participation in meetings, workshops and presentations. The Education Assistant will report to the Education & Outreach Coordinator.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES / PRIMARY DUTIES
- Lead virtual and on-site field trip tours with 2nd-12th grade public and charter school groups; 1 - 2 groups per day
- Guide students through classroom presentations, supervised group activities, and facility tours in 1- 2 hour programs;
- Assist in the development and implementation of educational programs and curriculum;
- Coordinate school calendar, targeted outreach, and visitor metrics;
- Assist with public outreach via social media, website, educational videos, and newsletter;
- Opportunity for additional skill and interest-based projects including media development, data analysis, event planning, and research.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS
- Undergraduate, graduate student, or recent graduate with experience in K-12 education, recycling, urban sustainability, environmental studies, community outreach, or related;
- Dependable, self-starting, organized, and motivated individual;
- Experience teaching in non-formal or classroom environments;
- Excellent communication skills; Spanish speaking a plus;
- Proficiency in MS Office
- Skills with Adobe (Photoshop and video editing) are a plus
- Proficiency in utilizing social media platforms, scheduling systems, and/or Wordpress a plus.
This is a paid seasonal internship (September through June) with an expectation of 15 - 20 hours per week, to be determined in consultation with the selected candidate. Most school group tours are between the hours of 9am and 3pm. This position offers the opportunity for growth into a year-round position for the right candidate.
